The First Weeks After Birth: What Your Body Needs
The weeks after birth are a major transition. Recovery deserves care, rest, information and support too.
Everyone asks about the baby. Someone should ask about you.
After birth, much of the attention naturally moves toward the baby. There are feeds, nappies, visitors, photographs and a seemingly endless list of things to learn.
But there is another person in the room who has just gone through an enormous physical and emotional experience: you.
Your recovery matters. Your sleep matters. Your meals matter. Your emotions matter. You are not simply the person taking care of the baby.
Recovery is not a race
There can be a strange pressure to 'bounce back' after having a baby. You see someone online looking put together with a newborn and suddenly wonder why you're still tired, uncomfortable or emotional.
Please remember that photographs rarely show the whole story.
Your body needs time to recover. Give yourself permission to move slowly, rest when possible and accept help instead of trying to prove that you can handle everything.
The small things count
Sometimes postpartum care sounds like big things: appointments, medication and recovery plans. But everyday things matter too.
Eating something nourishing, drinking enough water, taking a shower, getting outside for a few minutes or having someone hold the baby while you sleep can make a difficult day feel slightly more manageable.
You don't have to completely fix your life every morning. Sometimes the goal is simply to make today a little easier.
Don't ignore your own symptoms
If you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, difficulty breathing, severe headaches, significant swelling or anything else that feels concerning, contact a qualified healthcare professional promptly.
Postpartum care isn't only about checking whether the baby is doing well. You deserve to be checked on too.
